Inquiry #1: When does 51-1.03F(5)(b)(i) longitudinal tining of the bridge deck occur in the curing process described by special provision 51-1.03H since no overlay is planned? Should there be a bid item for grooving the bridge deck after the curing medium is removed and before curing compound no.1 is applied?

Inquiry #2: BO-3/3-6 shows waterstop between the end diaphragm and backwall on plan sheet 60. To accomplish this, half of the waterstop is installed in the deck pour over the end diaphragm. Subsequently waterstop is re-positioned and poured into the backwall. The standard sequence is to pour the end diaphragm, pour the deck, install expansion joint/polystyrene (above and below the re-positioned waterstop, and then pour the backwall. Bridge Superstructure Concrete Placement Sequence on plan sheet 66 shows pouring end diaphragms and backwall concurrently then pouring the deck over both at the same time. Please revise the sequence to show backwall placed after deck concrete resolving construtability ambiguities.

(#2)-Refer to the "STAGE 1" note and "BRIDGE SUPERSTRUCTURE CONCRETE PLACEMENT SEQUENCE" drawing on plan sheet 66. The Stage 1 note states: "Pour abutment diaphragms, intermediate diaphragms and lower 1' bent cap section for girder stability." This drawing and note do not indicate the backwall, nor does it indicate pouring end diaphragms and backwall concurrently. Please bid per the current contract documents.

Inquiry #3: Responses to bidder inquiry 1 are ambiguous. SP 51-1.03H requires, after strike off, misting until curing blankets are placed (nothing about finishing and tining deck concrete). Then, after the 7 day water cure period, remove cure rugs and spray curing compound during the same work shift. This leaves no time to grind and groove the deck before applying curing compound. When can the longitudinal tining occur? Grinding and grooving will remove curing compound. When can that occur?

Response #1:
"Longitudinal tining" involves constructing grooves in wet concrete. "Grooving and Grinding" cuts grooves in hard concrete. "Longitudinal tining" and the "Grooving and grinding" methods are two different procedures.
Longitudinal tining involves constructing the deck to the grade and cross section shown, performing initial texturing, and performing final texturing (grooves). Please bid per the current contract documents.
