Submit new inquiry for this projectInquiry #1: Would Caltrans please provide some clarity as to where the dowel bar retrofit (joint) will occur. The bid items is in EA's and seems to coincide with dowel bar baskets.
Can an explaination be provided of how the quantity of drill and bond dowel bar vs dowel bar baskets vs dowel bar retrofit was derived.
Or a typical drawing of a replacement section would be helpful.

Response #2:
1) Refer to Standard Plan P3A for determining where dowel bar joints are to be placed to match adjacent existing transverse joints. This slab replacement project does not include the "retrofit" placement of dowel bars. Dowel Bar baskets are to be placed whenever 3 or more consecutive slabs are replaced.
2) The quantity of drill and bond dowel bars are based on drilling and bonding dowel bars at the end(s) of each group of consecutive slabs estimated for replacement and Standard Plan P-10 details.

Inquiry #2: Based on Response #2 to Inquiry # 1;
Please clarify what work is included in Bid Item #13 Dowel Bar Retrofit (Joint) 2,940 EA.
Our interpretation of detail P3A would require dowel bars at all transverse joints. Dowel bar baskets would be used at any location longer than 1 slab, for the joints in the middle of a location, and drilling would at occur at the start and end of each location.
Plan sheet Q-1 shows Dowel Bar Basket in the table and notes it with an (N) = Not A Separate Bid Item.
