Inquiry #1: Good Morning,

I have the following questions about the end walls at BB and EB:

1. There appear to be no footings for these, can you confirm?
2. Can you provide planned elevations for the bottom of the end walls?
3. Can you provide a detail of the end wall connection to the cast-in-place girders? The only detail I can find is Detail D on the Girder Layout Sheet and it has no dimensions, nor does it show any rebar connection to the girders.
4. Are the end walls to be poured monolithic with the Girders, or is there to be a construction joint creating a seat of some sort (with protruding rebar) to be cast into the end walls?

Thanks

Response #1:Submitted for consideration.

Response #2:1: The end walls at BB and EB have no footings. The end walls are part of the bridge end spans which are cantilevered and have no footings, as shown in the plans. Please bid per current contract documents.

2: The bottom of end wall is 4’-8” below the top of bridge deck and the elevation at the bottom of end wall varies due to the cross-slope. For details regarding the end walls, including dimensions, refer to the “GIRDER LAYOUT” sheet, “Typical Section No. 1” sheet, and “STRUCTURE APPROACH (TYPE N930) (MOD)” sheet, as shown in the plans. Please bid per current contract documents.

3: The end wall is perpendicular to the cast-in-place girders and becomes integral. The end wall reinforcement goes across the cast-in-place girders and its reinforcement. For end wall reinforcement and dimensions details, refer to “SECTION I-I” and “DETAIL E” on the “GIRDER LAYOUT” sheet, as shown in the plans. No further details are needed. Please bid per current contract documents.

4: The end walls are to be poured monolithic with the cast-in-place girders. For concrete placing refer to the “GIRDER REINFORCEMENT No. 3” sheet and for concrete strength and type limits, refer to the “INDEX TO PLANS” sheet. Please bid per current contract documents.

Inquiry #2: Are railroad flaggers required? If so, please provide the method of compensation, thank you.
Inquiry submitted 08/16/2021

Response #1:The CLEARANCE MEMO in the informational handout states: “The cost of flagging and inspection provided by Railroad during the period of constructing . . . will be borne by the State.” The Contractor's attention is directed to this document in its entirety. The State will compensate the Railroad for flagging cost consistent with guidance in the CLEARANCE MEMO.

Inquiry #3: your last response regarding RR flagging,

Response #1:The CLEARANCE MEMO in the informational handout states: “The cost of flagging and inspection provided by Railroad during the period of constructing . . . will be borne by the State.” The Contractor's attention is directed to this document in its entirety. The State will compensate the Railroad for flagging cost consistent with guidance in the CLEARANCE MEMO.

the CLEARANCE MEMO says it will bill the contractor for flagging costs. Will Caltrans then pay railroad flagging by force account?

Inquiry submitted 09/03/2021

Response #1:The Contractor will complete the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) Right of Entry. The Owner (UPRR) will provide the name of a flagging company to the Contractor. The flagging company will invoice UPRR. UPRR will invoice Caltrans directly.

Inquiry #4: Section T-T on sheet 118 "Structure Approach Type (R) (30) Mod" shows TPB under the approach slab. Do you in fact want TPB under the Type (R) slabs? If so, I believe Bid Item #56 Aggregate Base Approach Slab becomes redundant.

Response #2:Refer to Addendum No. 1, dated September 24, 2021.
Response posted 09/27/2021

Inquiry #5: Item 3 in the list in the 2nd paragraph of Section 51-4.03B is replaced in the Special Provisions with the requirement that there be a minimum of 8" of deck slab concrete between deck slab reinforcement and the top of the PC I girder. This looks very unlikely to be able to be accommodated by the design shown on Part Typical Section on Sheet 104 of the plans. Please comment.

Inquiry submitted 09/22/2021

Response #1:Submitted for consideration.
Response posted 09/22/2021

Response #2:The Intermediate Diaphragms shown on Sheet 105 are cast-in-place as shown in the "GIRDER REINFORCEMENT No. 3" sheet (Sheet 110 of 122). Details for Intermediate Diaphragms are shown in Standard Plan B6-1. Please bid per the current contract documents.

Inquiry #7: Under which bid item is the grade beam under Concrete Barrier 842 (Mod) paid? What are the concrete specifications for the grade beam?
Inquiry submitted 09/22/2021

Response #1:Submitted for consideration.
Response posted 09/23/2021

Response #2:The concrete barrier footing, except for the CIDH, is paid under the Concrete Barrier (Type 842B Modified). The concrete specifications must comply with Section 83-3 of the Standard Specifications. Concrete must comply with Section 51 of the Standard Specifications. Reinforcement must comply with Section 52 of the Standard Specifications. Please bid per the current contract documents.

Inquiry #8: Is there any proposed drainage system behind the new extended End Wall? If yes, please provide details. Also, which bid item would this drainage system be paid under?
Inquiry submitted 09/22/2021

Response #1:Submitted for consideration.
Response posted 09/23/2021

Response #2:There is no drainage system required for end walls shown on the "INDEX TO PLANS" sheet (Sheet 98 of 122) and "GIRDER REINFORCEMENT No. 3" sheet (Sheet 110 of 122). For end wall details, refer to "Section I-I" and "Detail E" on the "GIRDER LAYOUT" sheet (Sheet 105 of 122). Please bid per the current contract documents.
Response posted 09/27/2021

Inquiry #9: The "Minimum Construction Clearance Envelope" detail shown on Sheet 97 indicates that no construction activities are allowed within these limits. Given that the Pier Protection Wall excavation falls within the Railroad Zone B (requires shoring) and that the Pier Protection Wall is the entire length of the widened and existing Bent 3, there is no room (5') to construct the shoring/excavate Bent 3. Should the contractor assume the Railroad will be shut down to perform this work?

Response #2:For railroad coordination requirements, refer to the Information Handout. Please bid per the current contract documents.
Response posted 09/27/2021

Inquiry #10: Please confirm what the "soffit elevations" on sht 99 refer to. I suspect they refer to the underside of the CIP T-beams ... or perhaps the underside of the bent caps ... and not the underside of the deck itself.
Inquiry submitted 09/23/2021

Response #1:Submitted for consideration.
Response posted 09/24/2021

Response #2:The "SOFFIT ELEVATIONS" shown on the "FOUNDATION PLAN" sheet (Sheet 99 of 122) represent elevations at the bottom of the existing cast-in-place T-beams. Please bid per current contract documents.

Response #2:The new hinge shown on "HINGE DETAILS No. 1" (Sheet 107 of 122) and "HINGE DETAILS No. 2" (Sheet 108 of 122) does not have cable restrainer units. Please bid per the current contract documents.
