Inquiry #1: In light of the unprecedented fires throughout California and California’s emphasis to build “resilient” infrastructure, will Caltrans follow its own High Design Manual Section 850-34 dated December 30th 2015 which warns against installing plastic pipe in areas with a potential for fire? This project lists Alternative Pipe Culvert in the Bid Schedule which includes plastic pipe as an acceptable product.

Inquiry #2: There are bid items for Type C and S drainage piping which is single and double wall pipe, however, the plans call for butt-fused HDPE. Please clarify which pipe is correct.

Inquiry #4: For the AC replacement of trenched areas, what is the existing road section? I don't see that indicated on shts X1 thru X6.

Inquiry #5: This project is located in a [moderate to high] Fire Hazard Severity Zones in State Responsibility Area (SRA) adopted by CalFire on November 7, 2007 (reference: fhsz_map44). Plastic pipe, specifically HDPE, is selected as drainage pipe material, are the most susceptible to damage from fire according to Highway Design Manual section 855.5 . Furthermore, Santa Cruz County experienced the Santa Cruz CZU Fire (2020) that burned and melted multiple HDPE culverts.

Will bid items No. 34, 35, 36 remain as plastic pipe or specified reinforced concrete pipe?

Inquiry #6: The DR determines the thickness and weight of fusible HDPE pipe. In the past this information is located on the Q sheets. The standard specifications do not provide this information. What is the DR requirement for the HDPE Pipe?
