Inquiry #1: Is it permissible to use Permanent Steel Deck Forms per Caltrans Standard Specification 51-1.03C(2)(c) to form the soffit of the deck slab for both bridges, 50-0540R/L?
Inquiry submitted 06/19/2018

Response #2:
No, Standard Specification 51-1.03C(2)(c) which allows the use of permanent steel deck forms was not included in this project, as structure 50-0540R/L is in a freeze-thaw area.

Inquiry #2: Per Plan sheet 12 of 97 - SC-1 during the latter half of stage 1 and stages 2 and 3 traffic on SR-58 will be limited to 1 lane in either direction. Per the current lane closure chart we are allowed a window to close 1 lane of traffic between 6:00AM and 7:00PM Mon-Thurs and 06:00AM and 12 PM noon on Fri before the traffic switch. This will make the westbound shoulder work difficult to pave as the new section is 1.3' thick. Is it permissible to close the #2 lane westbound during the work to reconstruct the westbound outside shoulders from 06:00AM on a Monday and reopen at or before 12PM noon on the Friday of the same work week?

Inquiry #3: Per plan sheet SC-1 the temp median paving is shown in a plan view and a X-section view. The plan view shows the temp median section extending to the ETW for WB and EB. The S-section view shows the temp median paving section extending to the ES for WB and EB. Which detail is correct? Does the inside shoulder get replaced in the areas with temp median paving or does it remain in place?

Inquiry #4: Per plan sheet 83 of 97 there are 196 LF of welded steel pipe casing to be installed in the new bridges. Per standard plan B6-10 the casing should extend 5' beyond the ends of the approach slabs. This would bring the total LF for one side to roughly 191 LF. Is the casing only going through one bridge? If so which bridge? Also how is the casing to be attached to the bridge?

Response #1:Submitted for consideration.

Response #2:The welded steel pipe casing is under the approach slabs and through the abutments of both left and right bridges per Standard Plan B6-10, Detail U-16.

Inquiry #5: Per plan sheet SC-1 after the temporary median crossovers are removed the inside shoulder is to be cold planed to grade. Is it the intent of the plans to leave a cold planed surface as a finish surface? This will be very rough. Should the inside shoulder instead be cold planed lower and a .2' lift of HMA be placed in order to provide a smoother finish surface?
