Inquiry #1: Hello:

On Sheet No. 83 of the project plans, the sound wall aesthetics are provided. Please indicate if Split-face texture for the CMU sound walls are required on both sides or only one side of the wall.

Inquiry submitted 08/31/2022

Response #1:Attention is direct to plan sheet "Sound Wall Details" SW-2 (83 of 239). Reference the schedule with the heading "Block texture (Both Sides)".

Inquiry #2: Hello:

On Sheet No. 82 of the project plans, the sound wall profiles are provided. After reviewing the expansion joint spacing there's a problem with this spacing not being modular for 16" long (1.33') CMU. On masonry sound walls, aesthetically it looks best to have expansion joints use full 16" CMU units between each other, to provide a masonry wall without any slivers or 2"-3" pieces.

An expansion joint of 48'-0" provides (36) equal blocks between, but when you introduce an expansion joint spacing of 37'-0", which is out of modular, it creates a (27 and 3/4") blocks spacing. In other words you have a unit 4" shorter and the unit below that in a running bond will be a 4" sliver.

This wall is 976.02 L.F., which roughly about (732) full size 16" units long. Please consider re-adjusting the expansion joints spacing so that the finished CMU wall looks aesthetically correct. There might be miters needed at the angle points, but those can done in the field.

Thanks.

Inquiry #3: On sheet #83 of the project plans, the schedule and section call for Block Type "A" to be a 12"x8"x16" Split-face-2Sided 3-Scored CMU. Is this the intention of the designer?

On most of the Caltrans projects we've built an 8"x8"X16" Split-face-2Sided 3-scored block is usually used to top off the wall. A 12"x8"x16" is a massive unit, and with a required 8" core, could clock in at about 90lbs per unit.

A typical 8"x8"X16" Split-face-2Sided 3-scored on top of a regular 8"x8"x16" Split-Face-2Sided units will provide a overhang of about 1-1/4" on each side. While a 12"x8"x16" Split-Face-2Sided 3score unit will provide 3" of overhang on each side. Again a 12" version is a massive unit.

Please provide an email address and I can provide photos from the manufacturer to send over to the state for a comparison.

Thanks.

Inquiry #5: Per Inquiry Question #3 response......."Response #2:Please place your bid in accordance with the current bid documents. Thank you"

I just got off the phone with both of the (2) largest and closest block Manufacturers to Fresno, Baslite Concrete Products out of Selma, CA and Angelus Block Co. Bakersfield, CA. This massive unit, a 12"x8"x16" 4Scored-2Sided Split-2Sided with an 8" CORES does not exist. They do not have the mold or parts to assemble or create it. They both mentioned it would require a custom molds & parts that could range anywhere between $12,000 to $20,000 per configuration and could take about 10+ months to even aquire the mold if approved. This is only the mold cost, which this project would have to absorb and that does not even include the cost of the unit itself. There's also bondbeams and 8" Halves that would have to be made. The total amount of 4Scored units required for this project would only be about 2,300 units.

Please reconsider your statement and if need be I can provide you the phone numbers of both of the manufacturers if you need to confirm the information. You can also reach out to me if you have questions or need clarification.

Thanks,

Inquiry #15: Will Caltrans allow the use of a form liner for bid item 76 “Concrete Surface Texture (Ripped Reinforcing Bar)”?
The special provisions under section 51-1.03G(1) state the “texture must simulate the appearance of concrete with embedded reinforcing bars and adhering concrete ripped from it. Bar imprints must be from no.5 or 6 deformed bars….”
This would seem to allow the use of a form liner. However the plans indicate on sheet 236 a very specific detail for the layout and placement of the #6 Rebars to be ripped out. Will Caltrans allow a form liner for Item 76?

Inquiry submitted 10/03/2022

Inquiry #16: The Information Handout part 5 page 74 note (a) includes notes to add to the specifications. In particular it notes to shotcrete the excavation facing within 24 hours after soil nails or ground anchors have been installed. And it states to Not leave excavation facing open for more than 24 hours. The special provisions are ‘silent’ on this. The standards state if stability testing is not performed, apply shotcrete facing during the same work shift that the excavation is performed. Will Caltrans allow the contractor to place shotcrete the next shift but within 24 hours of excavation similar to the Information Handout?
