Inquiry #7: On sheet 42 of the plans for Stage 3 it states to remove the temporary drainage systems. On sheets DE-11 and DE-12 it shows the removal limits of the embankment that was used to construct the detour. Does that mean that the rest of the detour embankment stays in place??? And do temporary drainage systems 1 & 2 need to be rebuilt after the temporary drainage systems are removed?? I understand that the temporary base rock and HMA are removed with bid item 27, roadway excavation. But that does not include the embankment, correct??

Inquiry #20: Shown on sheet numbers 88,89 & 90 is the conduit system for the bridge conduits and boxes to be installed on this contract. In addendum 1, bid item 97 is 2" conduit (Bridge) with a LF of 746 which i agree with. Bid item 98 is Conduit System bid at LS. Can the department please explain why there is two bid items for the same work ? I would recommend deleting one of the bid items.

The contractor performing the work is responsible for evaluating the site conditions and then supplying appropriate compaction equipment and applying the appropriate compaction effort to meet the contract requirement. If compaction cannot be obtained without water the engineer may authorize the use of water to aid in obtaining specified compaction requirement.

Inquiry #22: Since there are cuts and fills on the detour earthwork is Caltrans going to hold the contractor to the 30" from finish grade compaction requirements? Technically it is not a highway, but a one year temporary detour.

Inquiry #23: Per section 20-1.03C(2) of the project special provisions, " Remove vegetation within the excavation and embankment slope lines. Remove all tamarisk, arundo, tree tobacco and castor bean outside of the excavation and embankment slope lines, within the temporary construction easement, as directed by the engineer." If the contractor is to include the cost to remove certain trees within the temporary construction easement will the state please identify the type of all trees within the project temporary construction easement, as the contractor cannot determine the tree types from the plans?

Response #2:See Planting Plans of the advertised plans for locations of root wad installation. Installation locations for root wads are outside of the proposed excavation and berm areas. It is the intent that the root wads be removed and then installed outside of the excavation and embankment areas. There is no need for maintenance of the root wads from the time of removal to the time of installation.
