Inquiry #1: The project special provisions removed the dry and wet tensile strength requirements from the RHMA-G and added a tensile strength ratio requirement. Please note that the dry and wet tensile strengths requirements for RHMA-G are already subject to being waived per section 39-2.03B(5) if the mixture does not meet the requirements and the RHMA-G mix is treated with lime or liquid antistrip. Please allow the TSR requirement for the RHMA-G to be waived if the mixture does not meet the requirements and the RHMA-G mix is treated with lime or liquid antistrip as was done in previous Caltrans specifications.

Additionally, the Hamburg Wheel Rut testing requirements are now used to assess the moisture susceptibility of a RHMA-G mixture.

Inquiry #2: Will Caltrans count days during the intelligent compaction pre-mapping and CIR mix design coring? If so, will Caltrans suspend the project during the 5 day mandatory lag between pre-mapping and coring and during the roughly six week CIR mix design development period?

Inquiry #3: It is the opinion of the contractor, intelligent compaction equipment manufacturers, and intelligent compaction equipment representatives that pre-mapping puts undue stress on both the roller and intelligent compaction equipment. Furthermore, it is our understanding that the pre-mapping spec has been waived on previous projects depending on the district and resident engineer. Knowing these two facts to be true, is Caltrans willing to waive the pre-mapping requirement, i.e. not require the contractor to perform pre-mapping on the existing asphalt, or would Caltrans prefer to pay for the cost to replace expensive intelligent compaction sensors and any damage to rollers as incidental to the intelligent compaction bid items?
