Inquiry #6: At both rest areas, NB and SB, it appears that there will be concrete sidewalk that will need to be removed and replaced for the removal of the existing septic tanks, install of the new tanks, and the install of new force main. Should the concrete repair for these areas be covered under bid item 45?

Response #2:All demolition work including removal or repair of existing concrete sidewalks to remain should be included under Bid Item 48 Building Work Lump Sum. Attention is directed to Section 99-02071 REMOVING PORTIONS OF EXISTING FACILITIES of the contract specifications. This work shall be paid under Bid Item 45 “Minor Concrete (Sidewalk)” for the work shown on L-1 and L-2.

Inquiry #7: While visiting the SB location there is existing trees close to the existing septic tank that is to be removed but the trees are to remain. At this location once the tank is removed the new system is to be installed here. The existing tree canopy as well as root system could create a potential conflict with the install of this system. Please confirm that the tree canopy can be cut back to not impact the installation of shoring and install of tanks? If this allowed how is this work covered? Please confirm there will be no issue with removing the root system of the trees during excavation?

Response #2:The canopy and root system of all existing trees to remain are to be preserved and protected to the greatest extent possible. Attention is directed to section 5-1.36 “PROPERTY AND FACILITY PRESERVATION” of the Specifications. The limits of excavation allowed for installation of the new tanks is shown on L-1 and L-2. Pruning of the tree canopy or tree roots outside these limits to accommodate installation of the new tanks or removal of the existing tanks will be at the discretion of the Resident Engineer. Attention is directed to section 20-10.03C(2) “Prune Existing Plants” of the Specifications. If ordered, pruning existing plants is change order work.

Inquiry #8: While visiting both NB and SB locations it appears that there is existing tree canopy that will be in conflict with the excavation limits. Please confirm trimming of the tree canopy will be taken care of by Caltrans prior to contractor starting or will contractor be required to cut the trees back?

Inquiry #9: On sheet L-2 it shows a picnic table to be relocated at the location of the new tanks. However on sheet GP-3 this picnic table or existing concrete is not shown to be relocated. Please confirm this to be removed and relocated?

Response #2:The existing picnic table is to be relocated from the area of the new electric service panel to the existing concrete walkway near the electric vehicle charging station as shown on sheet L-2. The exact location will be confirmed in the field by the Resident Engineer. Relocation work shall be included in Bid Item 18 “Relocate Picnic Table”.

Inquiry #11: While visiting the NB location there looked to be a sewer manhole not shown on the plans by the existing leach field area. It was hard to determine if this manhole is in the new leach field location or not but seems like it could be in the way of the work area. Please confirm if this needs to be removed or not.

Inquiry #12: specs mention pine needle mulch per section 20-5.04B(6) and the planting plan PP-1 say to use tree bark mulch? Is pine needle mulch what is to be used or tree bark mulch being wood chip or shredded bark etc..

Response #2:Attention is directed to the Legend on plan sheet PP-1, wood mulch is Tree Bark Mulch. Refer to the Standard Specifications Section 20-5.04B(2) Tree Bark Mulch. Tree bark mulch must be derived from cedar, Douglas fir, or redwood species. The mulch must be ground such that at least 95 percent of the material by volume is less than 2 inches long in any dimension and no more than 30 percent by volume is less than 1 inch long in any dimension.
