Inquiry #4: Reference is made to sheet 2029 of 2208, South Tustin OH (Widen) and the “Concrete Strength and Type Limits” that are shown. The legend uses “Vertical Hatching” to identify PC/PS Concrete I-Girders. However, the description used is “Structural Concrete, Bridge”. Based on the “Structural Concrete, Bridge” quantity of 347 cy as shown on sheet 2028 of 2208, this quantity appears to include the volume of the PC/PS Concrete I-Girders. Please adjust accordingly and delineate both the legend and description used within “Concrete Strength and Type Limits” similar to that which is shown on sheet 1873 of 2208, Macarthur Blvd UC (Widen). Inquiry #24: Hello:

On page 1297 of the project drawings, SW1-3 "Sound Wall Details", Note #1 at the top, calls out for the CMU block and color to match exiting sound walls nearby. Going NB on the 55 from Willow Creek On-Ramp to the 5 SB Connector, the existing wall sound wall in the area is the following:

- 8x6x16 slumpstone (light tan color) (75%) - (field)
- 8x6x16 slumpstone (tan color) (25%) - (field)
- 8x8x16 4Score-Split-Face-2sides (dark tan color) (2-courses on top of wall)

Detail "A" of the plan sheet calls out all the units to be 8x8x16, but slumpstone is only available in 8x6x16 size. Please clarify if we are to match the slumpstone as I have listed for SW#514 and RW#506.

On sheet numbers 2168 & 2176 of the project plans, for RW#506, the CMU on retaining wall is shown with raked "cuts" required at the bottom & possibly at the top of the CMU wall to keep the elevation plumb, while the elrctrolier and other items are perpendicular.

This custom cutting for 550 L.F. is an expensive operation, please confirm this is the state's intent. Thank you.

Inquiry #29: Hello:

In regards to our previous question, INQUIRY #25, if the state is looking for (2) courses of 4ScoredSplitface-2Sides to top off the CMU sound wall on RW#506, while also having raked cuts on both the bottom and top of wall, the aesthetics of 4Score CMU is not going to look right.

There will be small slices and slivers of 4score cut as the slope changes. Which will impact the look of the 4score aesthetics, and also possibly the designer's intention. We recommend building the CMU wall to follow the grade/top of retaining wall. And then making up the differences at expansions and or electroliers with 2"+ cuts that will never be seen. You would have a more uniform looking sound wall with out the need of cuts and slivers of 4score at the top.

If needed please reach out to us to discuss and/or explain. Thank you.

Inquiry #38: Special Provisions Section 19-2.03B states " Dispose of surplus material. Ensure enough material is available to complete the embankments before disposing of it." Special Provisions Section 19-7.02C states "Imported borrow placed within 4 feet of the finished grade must have an R-value of at least 40 and a Plasticity Index less than 12 percent." Based on topography and new structural sections, this project is an export project. However, based on Caltrans bid quantities, it appears that the Contractor is expected to excavate a minimum of 4' from finished grade in paved areas (even where structural sections are less) in order to place imported borrow material with the specified R-Value. Overexcavation is specifically shown in project plans at retaining wall footings, box culverts and Lane Channel, however no overexcavation is specified in the roadway section. Please confirm that it is Caltrans’ intent to overexcavate beneath the structural section in order to place R-Value 40 material within 4’ of finished grade.

Pricing for these different striping details varies greatly and bid items 304 and 313 are not final pay. In order to provide competitive pricing and the best value to Caltrans, Contractors should price each item at their respective value to generate a composite price, however we are concerned that if the quantity is increased for the most expensive striping detail but paid for at a composite unit price, we will not be fairly compensated.
