Inquiry #7: The project has a large amount of excess dirt that is generated from the drainage work and concrete barrier transition footings. Is this dirt to stay on site or should the contractor account for disposal of this material? If it is to be off hauled for bidding purposes should we assume class II and plan to do soil testing? Spec Section 14-11.09B (stay on site) and 19-2.03B (dispose of surplus material) conflict each other.

Inquiry #17: Location 33 on C-11 shows placing an irrigation sleeve from the new MGS through the island to the other existing guardrail but plan sheet Q-7 only shows 8 LF. The quantity seems low to extend the sleeve this full distance.

Response #2:The 8LF quantity is to replace the existing irrigation conduit under the new MGS, connecting to the existing on both sides of the MSG. C-11 shows this extending to the existing guardrail. It is not necessary to extend all the way to the existing, but just far enough to replace the conduit under the new MSG and connect to the existing conduit. The 8 LF seems like the minimum needed, if additional material is needed to match the field conditions, ok to authorizes additional LF (0-10 lf as needed). But not necessary to extend new conduit to cover the full island width.

Removal of Vegetation Control Concrete has a standard bid item in the Caltrans listing.
Will out a direct answer of how the payment for this work is going to be paid. I see a potential for bids to vary from contractor to contractor. As one may include it within other items and other may be thinking this is going to be a change order as Caltrans does have a bid item for coverage of this work. Please advise so everyone can be bidding on the same level field.

Inquiry #30: Bid Item 8 Attenuator Truck. Project is 400 working days and Attenuator truck is only 200 shifts. Can Caltrans explain when we need an attenuator, specifications are not clear when we need one. If you look at the typical traffic control detail, an attenuator is needed whenever we take a lane, and work zone is adjacent to a live lane and to protect workers in the closed lane. Is an attenuator needed to set up signs for a lane closure or ramp closure to shadow the traffic control crew? Please clarify.

Response #2:Stationary Impact Attenuator Vehicles (SIAV) are not anticipated at all locations. Refer to Standard Specs 12-3.23C(2) and Special Provision 12-4.02C(7)(b) for the use of SIAV. Please bid per current contract documents.

Inquiry #31: To add to Caltrans Response to bidder inquiry 29 caltrans does have bid item code for the “Removal of Concrete (vegetation control)” bid item code 014326 use across multiple projects for when there is existing concrete. Again please note this only levels out the bidding for all parties involved. We kindly ask Caltrans to quantify this item and postpone the project till it has.
